Important! This is an project idea based on some ideas and documents. If you have any type of info on mentioned parts please contact me.

Theory

Idea is to use SFP/QSFP fiber optic transceiver modules that are generally used for network connectivity between devices or infrastructure to extend PCIe interfaces over fiber. This provides a PCIe slot that is around 100meters away from the host system without getting effected by EMI or any other interference source. According to theortical limits it should be possible to extend PCIe3.0 x4 ~4GB/s with 4x10G SFP or 1x 40G QSFP module and PCIe4.0 x4 ~8GB/s with 4x25G SFP or 1x 100G QSFP module. Assuming every fiber optic transceiver can be used it might even be able to use newer generation PCIe versions with similar bandwidth fiber optic transceivers if high-speed signaling problems is solved.

I’m mainly focused on finishing designs I have for OSIP Project. but if I have enough tme and resources I’ll do some testing on this topic as well.
